Here is an artist that doesn’t come around to often these days. A 25 year old self taught trumpeter, composer, arranger, producer and band leader from Manchester who along with others such as Finn Peters & the ever present Charles Lloyd have been ‘carrying the torch’ so to speak in today’s Spiritual / Jazz scene. Matthews debut album âSending My Loveâ dropped in 2008 to great acclaim in the U.K and has been met with open arms by the likes Gilles Peterson (who featured the album in his ‘Top 40 Best Of’ from that year. He’s recently recorded a podcast with him too this month – listen here ) and Stuart Maconie from the BBC. Did we mention he’s also a DJ? His most recent album ‘A Color Yes‘ has that ‘classic sound’ which can be identified with the likes of John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner and Pharoah Sanders and is most evident on tracks like ‘Ive Found Joy’ & ‘Color Yes’. Check the video for evidence! A well rounded ‘Jazzer’ to say the least and a name to watch out for in 2010…….
