Last week DJ Shadow’s posted a letter on his website addressing the state of the music industry and the artists that dwell within this realm and of course the music buying (not buying!) public. Looks like Dj Shadow ain’t too happy with the state of the music industry at the moment, but he wasn’t too happy in the mid-nineties when his seminal ‘Endtroducing’ LP dropped either.
Check this entry on his website to his fans and their responses. Very mixed comments all round, make your own verdict after reading it fully, would love to hear your feedback.

I recently downloaded 7.8gig of DJ Shadow’s music via Demonoid. I then deleted 7.4gig of those files as most of it was barmy old kak. The stuff I was left with I paid for years ago on CD. He sounds like an old fart who’s lost his zimmer frame and wont splash out on a new one because the kids around the corner might steal it from him.

not sure what to make of this? he is a legend, but has gone off the boil for me for ages, and agree with jeremy, last dj set wasnt what you’d expect
would love him to shut everyone up and drop a dope album out of nowehere and tour that for a year and let people know he still got it…too much thinking going on and not enough muzak!!

yeah, a new lp and a live show to hit the festivals and maybe come back down to earth a little? we know he is a true blue, but big business may have diluted the core a tad?
big shadow fan all the same, but want new fodder please

i agree with the new LP. If he drops a killer LP, he can silence the doubters and make money via clever marketing..maybe the format is dead but there are other means to embed music in marketable products
either way if the bank balance is down, the quick fix is to get a killer set together and tour the real clubnights and give his fans a night to remember and then drop an LP or EP or sth

I was going to post my thoughts on his site but I decided to do it here and make this point: If ChoiceCuts got on their high-horse and ranted at the punters the way DJ Shadow just did you’d be laughed off the island. That Hyphy stuff was pure shite – that’s the reason he’s not selling. Full stop.

So this guy who makes his records by using other peoples samples is giving out about the value placed on music and why you should still pay for it. Bit rich. I agree that most music out there is pure shite but its more down to the lack of quality control on blogs or from record labels. You wont see me having pity for someone who is making a living, might not be a comfortable one, but a living none the less from doing what he loves while all of us slug it out in the 9-5 then stay up till 3am catching up on what we like to do

@Scutch, great point about the sampling. Not one person pointed that out on his site.

maan forget the industry we all know about the value of music with the turn of records to cds and now digi mp3… WHAT CAN YA DO? .. what peops want most on this subject of news from Shadow is to hear of a top DJ Shadow album or a few new eps.. i sill think there loads more room for that sound of ‘entroducing’ that warm analog sound with pure class samples .. bring it to new levels.. take it from there
